Marriage Advice From Yours Truly - As Stolen From Some Random Person

On my way to work I heard some marriage advice on the radio.  First I will give you the advice that I heard and then I will share with you my take on it.

A lady phoned in and said that her mother always said "If you're going to fight, strip to the waist first."

Interesting.

However, I think in a man's eyes, that would just lead him toward cutting the fight short and heading straight for the make up session.  Correct?

Or maybe that's the point.

The DJ's laughed and commented "Oh, dear, they're hanging a little lower this year."

That ticked me off, I'm not going to lie.

So, I phoned in.

Yes. I'm one of those freaks who will phone into radio stations and talk to them like we are best pals.  And, my friends, you think I over share on my blog???

You have no idea!

When they answered I told them I needed to "tweak" the advice a bit.  My version:

"I think that she should go ahead and strip from the waist up, but he needs to strip from the waist down. No fight is truly fair unless they are BOTH laughing."

Well, they thought this was a riot.

I thought it was only just.

Really, he takes off his shirt to fight?  So what?

Why should he tick me off and then get to look at my boobs?  That's just dumb.

The ladies are the last things he's going to see.

Jerk.

Right my friends?

Perhaps the couple in this story took advantage of this advice.  They look truly happy, don't they? (She may have to remove her PANTS now to make it a fair fight.  I'm just sayin'.)

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. - John Rocchio remembers his wife as a fetching young woman with an air of intelligence and a fine pair of legs. Amelia Rocchio recalls her husband as a handsome young man who didn't have much to say at first.

It was the start of something beautiful — and long-lasting.

Wed in a Roman Catholic church in Providence in 1923, the Rocchios marked their 82nd anniversary several months ago and could be the world's longest-married couple.

Have a great day everyone!

LOL! Funny story! You're brave. I always get nervous when I call in to a radio show and end up hanging up! Wish I'd heard this one - would've made for a more cheerful commute!

Oh Lordie Rhonda that is FUNNY! I'll bet the listeners were cracking up too. You are one witty wittle wombat! And the 82-year marriage - WOW! How do two people who live together BOTH survive to be 100 or so. I wonder what their diet was like...

Susie said...

That is toooooooo funny!!!

DEFINITELY sage advice, Rhonda! :)

I'm a radio caller-inner, too. I really think you should start a late-night call-in show. Advice is nice, but Rhonda's gotcha covered...or not!

Lilly said...

Oh good on you Rhonda!! And what you said was hilarious!!! Loved your story on that couple - 82 years. Yep I think they got it right. I love a good love story. My grandparents were the same.

Again....great stuff here. I see why you're a FB! That would make it very hard to fight wouldn't it?

Drahdrah said...

Love your take on this. My husband and I have actually discussed (jokingly), that when we are fighting, we should be naked... just to soften thing up a bit. We haven't actually done it yet, but who knows what the future holds.

La Belle Mere said...

Thats so funny! Bless that old couple though - 82 years of marriage!! Bloody hell. Wouldn't want to see them stripped for an argument! Eurgh.

Great FB!

ha! we got that advice on our wedding day and have never followed it. It just doesn't seem to work. If i'm mad at him, I'm not gonna give him what he always wants! lame advice. :)

I'm guessing it was a MAN who came up that idea originally but as usual it takes a WOMAN to make it better. Good for you!

although after my dad's comment to my mom, she certainly wouldn't be showing off her girls

"you use to be pretty when you were young." poor thing seriously was trying to compliment her!

This wouldn't work for me. My husband has a killer body and seeing him nakey-nake would make me forget what I was mad about, lol! And he NEEDS to be corrected sometimes!

Mrs. Mootz said...

Hmmm...I do like that advice. But our fighting style is to see who can make the other person laugh first, because he who laughs first loses. I think I may be the winner of our next fight :)

personally, since i am always right. he should fight from the waist down. i should have the fun, not him. LOL j/k i agree w/ ya. cute blog. happy SITS!

Hilarious! So funny. And I love the long-married couple. I sometimes see anniversary announcements like that in the paper (well, not 82 yrs married lol! but long ones, like 50 yrs) and I have often been tempted to clip them out to save as inspiration. So often those folks have advice like, "Ignore half of what he does and praise the other half." Commonsense but definitely easier said than done;-)

Megan @ Megity's Handmade said...

That's hilarious!! Something to think about for our fights. :)

Anonymous said...

Yep I like the idea to strip but Im not sure the reason we were fighting in the first place would get resolved...lol. It would def come up again and might be worse the 2nd time around...hmmm...Good reading though! :)

Couldn't agree more! I always heard the saying that if you're going to fight you should fight naked... it's a great way to make up! :)

AdriansCrazyLife said...

That's funny! I know one of my friends makes her kids sit on opposite sides of the room when they fight and they have to sing the BYU fight song.

It gets them giggling so hard, they forget about the fight. I ought to try that on my hubby, but it would have to be the OU fight song, 'cuz he's from Oklahoma and wouldn't be caught dead singing anything from BYU!

mamammelloves said...

That's funny! :)

Excellent, excellent stuff - and hello from SITS!

If my own personal husband is so unwise as to tick me off, the last thing he will get to enjoy is me sans clothes. Your compromise suggestion is a good one, though.

Very funny and some good advice. You'll be laughing so hard at each other you'll forget what you were fighting about in the first place!

Very funny! Excellent suggestion - the pants off for men. It evens things out nicely.

Rae Ann said...

I have some friends who actually stripped naked if they were going to really have a fight. To this day, if they start getting riled up they start taking off clothing. They have been married around 35 years.

CoffeewithZooly said...

It works.

Yes I'm silly enough to have tried the advice. During a recent debate on what colour we should paint our walls and a very long winded debate from my engineer of a husband on the benefits of beige. I simply took my top off and sat down for him to finish. Well he finished mid-sentence, asked why & then went off to sulk because of my silly way to fight. The wall is the red I choose.

Amy said...

See, I am thinking that the men are the ones who always came up with the fixing a fight ideas. The world needs more people like you who can tell 'em what's what. Fair is fair. :)

Angeline Schnare said...

Keep calling the radio stations, I love listening to the "crazy" callers. The world would be so boring without it. As for the marriage advice I'll stick with keeping separate bank accounts!
Happy SITS day!

I totally agree with you! The guy removes his shirt? Big deal. The problem will be those fights in the car - or those little fights that you have in public. Don't no how the no pants/no shirt thing would work then.
